Beside the insensible book covers that seem to pop out almost every month, there also exists another problem in the world of self publishing.

Decency.

I did not think I had to be part of the ‘censorship patrol’ when I began to explore the field of other self-published authors, but the more I spend time on the internet looking up different titles to read either for reviews or ha-has, I noticed more books tend to show a more sexual flare-ups of half-naked women and close to nude men on the covers of their books. While I may think the genre of these books may fit the cover (e.g. romance and exotica), I think other books don’t, especially for thrillers.

The only reason why I could only imagine authors posing the desires to create a cover with that much promiscuity is for the sake of making the book seem ‘sellable’ i.e., attempting to grab the reader’s attention. While I would approve the needs to grab their attention, I disapprove of the methods these authors have used. Who really needs to see these kinds of pictures when the subject of these books has nothing to do with the cover art? For all I care, there’s no real need to show these kinds of things to the public, especially when these covers don’t reflect the novel’s plotline. If there’s desperation to use promiscuity to get the reader’s attention, then there’s a higher chance that someone is going to assume the author’s book is not really worth the read.
